turned out i found a problem in Device Manage with my sound hardware. i went to windows update and dl'ed eeeeeeeverything i could. took a while but then when i went back to device manager everything was cool. i wasn't taking into account that my laptop is pushin' almost 2 1/2 years of age here. basically i was just too impatient and wanted atomix to work right away without checking anything first.
so if anyone else out there like me has an old comp and upgrades their OS, make sure to get all the lastest drivers and go to windows update.
