While MPEG uses only a main frame of reference and calculates the next for differences, an avi clip calculates each frame individually, and its total dimension is given by the dimension of a frame for fps (the number of frame per second) and for the duration total of the clip in seconds. It's easy to deduce, therefore, that this will have a weight greater than MPEG, but also a better resolution. For an exaustive list of compression formats for the visualization of clips/videos visit www.omeganet.it/utenti/indiana/formati video.html.

I have used both mpeg 4 and divx to encode video and if your looking for high compresion and great quality go with divx. Just gotta know how to set it up right thats all.
