depending on your soundcard and setup..

2 channel works great, one channel for each virtual deck in Virtual DJ

Having a 3rd channel could give you samples to that channel, if you want

And am i right in thinking that to use tcv you need a soundcard with two rca sockets for input and output, for example the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard.

yupp

doesnt have to be RCA, but you need at least 1 line in at soundcard, but recommend strongly 2.
One for each turntable (though you can actually use one turntable too, and swap between the decks you want to control in virtual dj)

And the soundcard needs 2x out, if you are going to use an external mixer (or you CAN also use 1 out, and use a stereo splitter, but that would give you mono in each channel of the mixer)

So, you see, VDJ is very powerfull when it comes to the range of soundcard setup, you can do almost anything you like.

But still, having a soundcard with 2x line in, and 2 x line out, would be the best :)
