Guys, theirs alot of devices out there and everyone complains about them because of the fact that some are buggy, and some are too expensive and whatnot. As an electrical engineer, I enjoy thinking of new ideas that will benefit you guys as professional and amateur dj's in a way that would not drain your pockets.
So the question remains:
What would you guys like to have in your ideal VDJ/MIDI/TURNTABLE Controller (some examples are Behringer bcd2000, EKS XP10, PCDJ DAC3) and dont be afraid to mension something about price as well as quality.

Well, have a look also to Hercules MK2...
OK, if you wanna try, most important thing is to have licensed version of VDJ with full specs, then let's start making the perfect controller. You are the ingeneer, i put the money.

for me anyways,
PCDJ DAC3 works fine for regular DJ-ing (ie. weddings and such)
My complaint with it is the microswitches are faulty. I have had to re-solder my controller a few times robbing switches from buttons that I don't use to replace the play/pause and stop buttons.
I found out that I am not the only one with this issue and even on PCDJ's web forum there is a post saying that PCDJ is accepting controllers under warranty for replacing those switches. Crazy...
TCV's and HIGH QUALITY mixer with midi compatiblity for DJ-ing and VJ-ing (ie. nighclubs, and big parties)
I use the Ecler Nuo 04 mixer with my Technic 1200's. The midi functions and the ablitiy to map and contol them are unbeatable. The quality of the mixer is good so it makes for a perfect combo. Just wish more mixers where midi compatible as well so we could have other options with price.
One thing I wish that would be implemented would be to get some sort of compatiblity with the "fader switches" on almost all mixers on the market now. If we could come up with a hardware switch box like pioneer made for their DVD players so we could plug into our computers. Imagine a little switch box you plug into almost any club mixer so you can transition videos while mixing using the crossfader.
Currently you have to have the x-session or a midi mixer to do that.

A much simpler fix is to take the DAC-3 apart and spray the defective switches with contact cleaner spray (As used for cleaning noisy volume sliders/crossfaders) - This works a treat and I have not had any further problems with my DAC-3 since (In use for almost 1 year since doing this with no problems.)
It's a shame that it has this fault though, which spoils an otherwise excellent controller, but once fixed as above, it works flawlessly. Newer DAC-3's may not have this problem anymore.

believe me ... I tried to clean it first but it didn't work. Shortly after cleaning it out they got worse and I had to do the micro surgery (which isn't easy).

OK, GREAT, so we have established the fact that we want to make sure that our buttons and sliders are SUPER dependable to handle the beatings they may take after a long amount of playing.
But what about features? What kind of features would you guys like to see on a new type of DJ controller?
Maybe a solid touch sensitive turntable, few cue buttons, a few effects buttons, LED's?

That's strange - Mine has worked flawlessly since it was cleaned. After spraying the switch (Around the small button on the top), you need to press it repeatedly for a minute or two to help work it into the switch. Then repeat the process again.

@jpboggis what is the problem with these switches that they need to be cleaned all the time?
Posté Fri 03 Nov 06 @ 7:16 pm
What other things would you guys like to see added to a vdj/mp3 controller??? any features, improvements, new ideas?
Posté Fri 03 Nov 06 @ 7:17 pm
The switches may be faulty in some way (Might be OK in newer DAC-3's that are being sold now - I bought mine when they first came out in late 2005) - Typically the Cue/Play buttons start to malfunction and ignore presses.
I've only cleaned them once (With standard contact cleaning/lubricating spray as used for noisy faders) and they have been fine ever since.
For me the DAC-3 is an ideal controller. The only major changes I would make to it if I was designing the DAC-4 would be alphanumeric displays (So trackname, etc. can be displayed), perhaps pressure sensitive jogwheels (So pushing down stops the music and allows scratch) and more reliable microswitches!

My perfect controller would be something like a digital turntable. I really do think the turntable interface for control is the perfect interface for interacting with music. The only problem with REAL turntables is the whole analog to digital problem. A lot can go wrong with TCV, needles, grounding, etc. CD players also do an analog to digital conversion for TCCD but this works a lot better technically than turntables do. Too bad they're CD PLAYERS! So that's my perfect controller, CD TCCD stability, with the feel of turntables. SL-DZ, CDJ, Numark and Denons do not even come close.
So my perfect controller would have a motorized platter and slipmat surface system that is IDENTICAL in feel to a Technics 1200 or similar. That is same feel in torque, hold & release charecteristics, platter size, quartz lock, pitch, etc. But with no tonearm and needle. These would have to be replaced by some digital component. Maybe a motorized position slider at the top of the device, above the spinning platter. You could grab the song position slider and slide it all the way to the left to get to the start of the track, slide it to the middle to get to the middle of the track, etc.
The pitch slider would stay where it is. The platter and motor would be identical to a real turntable. along the front or left side of the turntable, there would be some buttons to control software. Cue points, effects, loops or whatever. They would probably be assignable I guess.
So there it is. My perfect controller. A digital franken-table.

That sounds great. So you guys would throw a great party with one of these. The idea must be conceptualized and all possibilities must be considered. I want to have a controller that is designed BY DJ's not by just an engineer.
1) So we want some solid buttons that wont possibly oxidize at the internal contacts (problem with cheaper buttons)
2) A motorized platter to simulate the look and feel of a real platter.
3) Some motorized sliders would be great to match the position of the software. (I think a touchpad style like mousepad would be fantastic)
4) Scratch Precision (by high resolution encoders)
I think it is pointless to integrate the actual audio output in the turntables. My ideal controller would be used as a CONTROLLER and not a sound output device. Guys these are fantastic ideas and suggestions, i need some more input on this so that i can customize something to ALL OF OUR NEEDS. I really would like everyone to add input!
Any other good ideas??

That is one great product....one problem...ITS 700 dollars! I want something that is ideal for people who want some professional grade product but are also able to afford it if they are on a budget.

@skyfxl you posted "how about a motorized rotary eq"
What do u mean by that.....do you mean some knobs to control high mid and low with motorized movement?
