What exactly, does autolatency do? In other words, in what
circumstances would it be better to check this than set it at max= 1024msec. ?

autolatency calculates the best latency for your card
setting it to the highest will degrade proformance in doubt always use "auto latency"

well, thats not really what it does..
AUTO LATENCY uses your soundcards own lateny, and let the soundcard control the latency itself.
This will work best for a lot of soundcards, SPECIALLY the pro cards like u46dj etc.
Setting latency manually in VDJ, will make VDJ try to control the latency, instead of the soundcard. This can also be a good option on some cards.
So what is best on your PC, you should test yourself
