Sujet: Who decides what equipment is used for?

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Something which really annoys me about hardware manufactures and the DJ press, when they advertise hardware they tell you what kind of DJ it is for, they tell you what level you are at if you buy this hardware..

In my view it's a con playing on the weakness of peoples pride and perhaps even arrogance, of course in order to increase profit.

For example: The new Pioneer CDJ400, Pioneer's own description includes this "The CDJ400 deck is a perfect partner for the DJM400 mixer and together they provide the ultimate home party set–up."

So they themselves have labelled it a device for home parties, i.e bedroom DJ's, they mention somewhere else "for aspiring club DJ's".
I'm not sure how many people DJ'ing home parties/bedroom DJ's would spend that amount of cash for just one unit, and I'm not sure how many club DJ's would turn their nose up at such a piece kit, branding it "for aspiring club DJ's".

As someone who's played at both home parties and super clubs, I can tell you that I'd not go anywhere near a home party (with drink spills and people falling over you) with such a pricey bit of kit, but I'd love to see these units pre-installed at a club, or even take a couple myself if space permitted.

I even DJ'd in front of over 1000 people with the Hercules DJ console MK2 (which I admit is very basic for Club DJ'ing) but I got the job done with it nevertheless. Although branded by many as a "toy", I didn't have pieces of plastic falling off in my hands, the beats weren't off time, the music selection was not altered, yet somehow I'm told this piece of equipment is not "right" for a club, not by the Club manager, not by the clubbers, but by the people who sold it to me coupled with the pride obsessed DJ's who think that equipment has to be gold plated, super heavy and cost a fortune to be worthy of a "Pro" classification.

The Hercules MK2 is an extreme example, because it is "basic" and has some restrictions, but the point is that it gets the job done in any environment, the fact you're in a club doesn't cause the device to not work properly, and restrictions aren't so great as to cause a DJ any serious problems when mixing live.

But if a CDJ400 is for "aspiring club DJ's" and "Home parties", I wonder what the greater concern is at Pioneer, the way a DJ works or the way a DJ spends.

I certainly wont be a victim of such marketing.

I can see your point, but on the other hand the marketing guys at Pioneer probably thought that advertising something fairly low in their range as being "for pro DJs" might (potentially) lose them sales of the CDJ800/1000.

I had an opportunity to try the CDJ400 yesterday, and it's very good.

Who cares? buy what you need, of course theyre going to try to sell you their product

I think you missed the point, you're probably smoking something exotic in a nice bannana republic in mega tempartures and for that I salute you.
But my problem is the way they advertise products in a way that could undermine potential customers, it's just silly, a child could spot the mistake.

I've just wrote a letter to Pioneer, introducing myself as the owner of a club chain (10 clubs), saying that I was really interested in the CDJ400 because it has the exact functionality which most of my DJ's crave, as the majority of them now bring Laptops with them when performing, but when I read that this unit is for "Home parties" and "aspiring club DJ's" I had no choice but to buy 10 pairs of the iCDX instead as this is said to be suitable for professional environments too.

Ok I admit it, this is just a rant, but it's not pointless :).

Well Bren, it is not a point less post. Also, mitchythekid is right, it is all marketing. Some "bedroom" DJs want better equipment than some "Pro" DJs and visa versa. Here is the question you should be asking, "Am I going to invest in these units or not?"

It is just my opinion but, to accuse someone of smoking something is rude, especially not knowing who they are. If the person you were accusing has had drug problem you could have caused them a great deal of very personal pain.

Don't sweat who decides to label anything just make smart decisions, as I know you can, and invest in the equipment that suites your needs best. Bollox with whether it is a "home" or "professional" piece of kit.

Peace

"Smoking something exotic" - It doesn't make it illegal, as many things can be smoked legally, many exotic things, in fact your country and my country both allow cigarettes to be bought and sold. Please don't keep taking the moral high ground with me Terry, you have your view and I have mine, accept it and move forward.

This was suposed to be a debate about the way products are marketed, not about whether Pioneer are selling equipment, or if I am going to buy a product.

What ground am I supposed to take?? Obviously you have a preconceived idea of who I am supposed to be, please enlighten me.....

I was trying to point out something I thought you had not considered, nothing more, nothing less.....If my statement upset you please accept my apology.

Well since that debate we had on here I've noticed that you're quite quick to disagree with what I say or the way I say it.

Maybe your like it with everyone or I'm just paranoid, I don't know but I've noticed it.

I am like that by nature Bren..nothing personal. If it were I would not have worked with you on making a banner for you. Much like you I speak my mind.

Why dont you guys have ur arguements in PMs? Lets settle down a lil :)

The herc is ok n for the money it's really good, but let's face it - it's to basic. Why have they not brought out a mk 3 that's rackmount and has everything.
