Sujet: Video Camera Suggestions for low light situations

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Hey guys. I have a Sony TRV-17 Camcorder that I've been using for the live simulcast feed on my VJ jobs, but it looks horrible in low light situations which is what most parties are. I have a light on it, but it's a joke. I need a good video camera that gives a clear bright image in low light. It dosn't have to be loaded with bells and whistles. I would only use it to feed a live simulcast to my plasma and projection screens. I won't really be shooting video, just using it as a video source.
I was told by a friend to look at B&H in Manhattan, but the prices for cameras start around 2K which is a little steep. Does anyone use/know/can suggest a good video camera for low light situations that cost under 2K? I could use a bright 500 Watt Halogen on a pole with a diffuser to get a clear picture with my current Camcorder, but that ruins the whole mood and look of the party.

get yourself a decent and i mean decent colour/black and white infrared camera, if its a decent one you will find in low light conditions you will not lose your colour quality and they come at a fraction of the cost of what you mentioned and you wont need any external white light source... hope that helps

Thanks for the suggestion. Any particular models come to mind? Isn't infra-red a technology for detecting heat signatures? I'm sorry if that sounds like a stupid question, but that's what come's to mind when I hear that term.

blaide, has your camera no night-mode?

hi blaide

best thing is pop round to your local radio shack or something similar http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=33.206307,-87.527245(tuscaloosa,%20al.%20)&daddr=33.2399,-87.576(NORTHWOOD%20SHOP%20CTR%20NORTHPORT,%20AL%2035476) (i think its your nearest store or theres one near the university) and explain what you require or visit a local security/electronics store, r/s has cameras similar to what i suggested have a look at those, but going off their sales lit' you will need a bigger unit but at least you will get an idea...hope it helps

nice bit of kit and good advice but i think he's trying to keep the cost down...

It's only money, and what is the cost of peace of mind? Some of those night vision cameras may do for now. However, just like this software, most are never satisfied and will want more. You will buy one of these, and then say, I should have gotten that pan, tilt, zoom camera because my competitor has one.

amahm,lol

right again, totally agree...

to answer an earlier question, my camcorder has a "night shot" function, but everything is green. I need a camcorder that will be good in a large dimly lit ballroom that holds 500 people. I'll check out the sony camera recomended on Ebay. Let me ask you, in a VERY dim room, you can clearly see people pretty much the same as you would see them with your own eyes?

damn close....but the problem is you get grain noise. it just depends on what settings u use. I would check locally & see if you can rent one for a day b4 you invest money. They usually go for $85 a night. I had to rent a couple b4 to do a 4 cam video shoot.

After much research on various video forums, store sites, reviews and the suggestions on this thread, I went ahead and purchased the Sony vx-2100 which is the updated 2000. It's light sensitivity goes down to 1 lux from what I've been told and has the best low lioght rating in it's class. Wasn't cheap though. By the time I bought the camera, lenses, battery, case and 4 year warranty, it set me back about $2,900.00. I need it for a huge VJ party for JP Morgan financial this coming Monday and I will get my use out of it as i've steadily been increasing the # of VJ jobs I book. It should be here in 2 days and I'll have the weekend to play with it before Monday.
Thanks again for all the replies and recommendations. This is a great forum where people actually try to help each other.

nice one

enjoy your new toy, sounds as though morgan financial will be paying for it, lol...enjoy

The Panasonic camcorders work well in low light too, but you have to make sure it's the 3 cccd models.

That Sony D70 has incredible zoom and nearly night vision.
Then you can select the back light feature and it really lights up the picture.

Paid $600 on ebay for mine and I don't need a camera man while I am mixing.

I also hardwired the remote with a ir module so I can mount it blind on the truss and have full control.
