So yesterday I hade a gig at a club in my hometown. The place is called Moon and is THE place to be among a great number of peaople. So you guys can guess that I was happy when I got to play there. So I went to the place at 21.20, just enough time to plug in the hercules and to configure the TCCD, so far so good, everything works ( should also mention that the place has thre floors, and I was playing at the rock floor ) so afte aproximatly 2 hours vdj freezes, but the sound keeps going, I was like wtf ?!?!..luckily I hade som cd´s with me which I put on,restarde the whole computer, which took a while ( normaly my lappy is really fast with booting up ) so everything seems normal, start playing with vdj again..and it freezs upp again..so I was like twice in a row..somethings not good here..plugd in the 2nd cd..and continued to play..reeboted the comp..and what do I see on the screen..no operating system found...now I started to panic...but luckiliy I had enough music with me so that I could finish the night of without my lappy. So this morning I went and bought a new harddrive, ( since it lookd like a hdd related problem ) and changed it, so far so good. Started to install win and the comp froze again..so I reeboted again and went into bios..harddrive gone..so then it came to my minde that I have a deffective ide controller on my lappy..which forces me to replace the entire motherboard. But with my luck..warranty expired last year, and I still have payments on the lappy, to fix it costs me aprox 500 euro..have approx 800 euro left to pay on it..and to make things worse I have a gig tomorrow..Now I´m in a dillemma..don´t really know what to do. Have to call my insurance company to check if they cover these kinds of errors(not caused by user )..Should also mention that I DO NOT, blame VDJ of this error..could happen to anyone.

comp specs:

Acer aspire 1694 WLMI
1024 Mb DDR2 Ram @ 667 MhZ
Ati Radeon X700 128 Mb Ram
Samsung 80Gb harddrive ( originally seagate momentus 100gb )

so guys, any advice on what the he c k I should do ?

Sincerly yours

Sorry your computer was stolen, you should call your insurance company right away.

It didn´t get stolen, luckily :) my motherboard ( more or less entire computer ) died..in the middle of a gig :p should have been a little more clearer at that point ;) but thanks for your concern m8 ;)

I can read. As I said "Sorry your computer was stolen, you should call your insurance company right away".

Tayla

sorry for hi jacking..

AMAHM.sorry m8...didn´t quite get ya there ;) now I am the one who can´t read :P hehe..*silly silly me*

I dropped it, it got run over, something. On a serious note, is it woth replacing the mother board? You said you were still making payments, that hurts.

Tayla, got it but was a little confused (I get that a lot). Will get back to you, thanks.

hehe, you have two options. take the subtle suggestion to get it fixed. or what im about to do myself, buy some decent diagnostic software and assume nothing about your machine's health unless you can read screendump hex (which im sure none of us can).

for anyone who uses their computer for performing regularly, i highly suggest this. you can never be too careful and remember we take it into sweaty steamy clubs which will kill hot components. let your machine cool down and dont lug it into the cold immediatley after your set (especially if its 2am and everyone in the club is jumping and screaming). Quickly cooling down parts coming out of a steamy club will cause condensation on the components immediately which is super bad. it might not fry anything immediatley but it will build up considering clubs are very smokey as well. tobacco smoke has an amount of electrical conducting particulates which have been found to achieve critical mass at some point and cause shorts.

needless to say, its never safe to assume what has gone wrong, so but the software and regularly test your machine. you wouldnt see a Formula1 racer finish a race without a few pitstops, even if he could carry all the fuel he needed...

check out www.mirco2000.com . it seems to get good reviews and it can be installed on a usb so you dont need a working o/s to actually get into it.

for new computer users, always do a 2 day burn-in with all you gear connected.

Hehehe...YepYep ;)

paz..thanks for the recommendations..I´ll try the software ;)

It makes you wonder how people can afford to buy music when they have to make payments on a laptop... Oh nevermind I wont go there

If you cannot afford to have a backup system you shouldnt be out doing pay gigs without one.

I guess you missed this, in your rush to judgement. "but luckiliy I had enough music with me so that I could finish the night of without my lappy."

tried the software Paz recomended me..as I assumed it is the IDE controller that´s screwed...well..back to old school for me for a while until I can get my lappy fixed

Quick alternative, use a firewire or usb external hard drive? that would get you off the ground asap....

hmm...haven´t thought about that :) thanks for the tip m8..I´ll try that out today and I´ll let you know how it went :)

well..I tried to hook upp my lappy with an external drive..unfortunatly that didn´t go either..so now I´ll be leaving the computer for a while and get back to cd mixing until I can either afford a new lappy or til I get it fixed
