Ok; Rumor mill pointed a fellow user to my mailbox as a video input expert?

He was having problems with the Camera plugin (I actually never got to fooling around with that plugin)

But.............

Here goes: HOW THE F**K DO I USE THE DAMN CAMERA PLUGIN

A real world experiment by Mad DJ/Compu-geek DJ Marcel.

Step one. Install your capture device

I use a mid-level USB capture device the Dazzle DVD recorder. Here is the link.
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2151734&CatId=1428

Step 2: Install the Pinnicle studio 10 software that comes with the device.(Takes a while make sure you have coffee.)

Select S-video or composite video input in capture options.

Personal experience with this model is that it defaults to composite input only when not using studio 10 software but you can try I did not have any success.

Step 3: Plug your video device into the dazzle DVD recorder.

I used a cheap DVD player with a fireplace similar to to Yule log (yes they make such a DVD - my girlfriend found it) Plugged it into the Composite video input of the dazzle and pressed play. Then I Activated the plugin and waited........

It worked fine.

I had a fireplace being broadcast onto my second monitor. Then Just for Fun I put some music into an Automix playlist and hit play. I had Alicia Keys, singing over an image of a fireplace.

Items Of Note

1 Overall performance of VDJ was slightly slowed. I can only assume that this was due to the increased demand on the cpu/vidcard to receive the video input, process it, and spit it back out.

2 The video quality was reduced due to the dazzle dvd recorder defaulting to Composite video input. If you are broadcasting onto a large high - deff screen you will not be happy with the image. however like anything else you can reduce the resolution of your second display to match a television 480x600 if I remember correct.

3 It ain't perfect but it works. I had music playing with a DAC2 controller hooked to an external mixer with a DVD player suppling the video input and I had a Decent image. I do not think a high Def image would not be possible with this video capture device used in this fashion. You'd probably get a better image from a creative labs web-cam.

Computer specs (Test Machine.)

Intell Pentium D 2.66 ghz (first gen dual-core)
ATI 2600 pro video display card 512 GB
2 GB system Ramm
ASUS p5n series board (older model.)

This whole process gets shrunk down to 3 clicks if using a web cam - That post above was for using an external capture card.

Bump ( for now)

I have a Dazzle DVD Creation Station, and I was never able to get it to work with VDJ's camera plugin. Vista supposedly installs drivers for it from Windows Update, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Do I need that Pinnacle softwrae for it to work?

I'm not 100% certain. I've never tryed it with VISTA. The machine I used it on last night was an XP machine.

I use a Web Cam on my Vista machine.

Thanks for the PM - Marcel

I'm starting to think the key is the Webcam. I got it to work with an outdated webcam I found around the house but the quality was not there.

I only use this plugin During Mobile Shows, Hense the reason I use a webcam, I only have to have a limited area to make my clients happy. I'm going to wait a bit before using anything like this at the stripclub. Just to see if the team visits this plugin in upcoming versions.

It's great idea though. I'm going to try it with cam-corder and see if the image is better with that than from a DVD player.

Thomas, I trust you got my messages.
If you install the drivers only, you don't need to run the software.
If you run the software, after selection of feed (s vid) right click and select exit.
Then open the plug in.
If the capture device is not available because of the other software it may not work in vdj.

I might just play it safe and hook everything (camera + VDJ ) through my DVD recorder and output to s-video TV.... all I have to do is change the channel on dvd player... no biggie...

Hey I might just record my session tonight and upload a little bit for you guys... ( ahh sucki, sucki now )

Now that I'm think about - time is going to be an issue.

I got to the club about 3 hours before 1st guest to get everything setup. Did a visual testing and everthing worked fine ( external camera setup + VDJ running through DVD Recorder. I was all excited about this until I got about 2 songs in and decided to show off my new setup. I switched to channel 2 of DVD for camera usage and the music cut out. I had to switch back to continue the music. So no camera for new years.

Yesterday I baught a 5 mp web cam. It works like a charm EXCEPT for the delay in motion and lighting. I'm going to seak out the dazzle and the express dvd Rick adviced.

Oh happy days are here and again... after taking on a lot of great advise Marcel and Mp3jrick. I decided to look into an idea. If VDJ recognizes web cams but not standard camera. I found a camera that will stream online with a click of a button. Works perfect with no delay in picture output. The quality is normal.

Camera 300.00usd to pc with no capture card needed just a fire wire 36.00usd ( 5 pin to usb )... I hate the fact that I have to transfer recordings at 1:1 rate but since I saved my self money, time and setup. I will live with it.

I can't wait to use it this weakend. I'm also going to record my son's hockey game and edit it in Sony Vegas for him as a teaching tool. The idea's are flowing now.

Cool Fatkatz.

Glad you got it sorted - Post what model camera you are happy with will ya?

Picked up this camera, and this capture device. I can not get it to show in VDJ. What do I need to do?

I'm assuming that this does not work with a mac...

That camera looks like it should be able to show up in VDJ without the dazzle device.

If not - install the drivers/software with the dazzle and try hooking the camera to the dazzle in the rca video inputs

The Pinnacle software really sucked for me... could not get it to work on my computer after many attemps. Read some reviews on most of their products and I keep seeing instability issues with the software.

Looks like the camera maker sells a USB adapter of its own.

I like Fatkatz solution... I am going to give that a try.

How???

Did that. What is the procedure, in the software, that I am supposed to do, to activate? Really, I don't know jack. I am just trying stuff. I can get the camera to work in the software it came with, but I don't want to have to record to a dvd or hard drive, to get it to work.

Try this:

Hook the Camera up to your computer directly - don't use the dazzle yet.

open vdj.

In the camera plugin tab go to the DEVICE button.

Click on it. A small window will come up with all capture devices available to you. If your camera is there move your mouse over it and click on it.

Quickly double check that your selected your camera.

Then Activate the plugin.

It should take a couple of seconds t o process the data but as long as VDJ recognizes your camera as a valid capture device It should work.

Bam, that's the trick, I don't get. Hook it to what??? I don't have any rca inputs, and the camera does not have a usb plug.
