Sujet: Installing ver5.0rev6 on same computer as ver4.3 ?

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

I was wondering if their arre any special tricks to installing ver. 5.0rev6 on a computer that already has ver.4.3 on it,
but leaving 4.3 fully in tact and operational; just in case. This would be aon a shuttle with an internal 500 gB HD that contains all the song files and programs, running xp pro.

I plan on doing this this weekend but am a lil shy right now, w/o some expert advice.

i had some occasional freezes or crashes at first , but then i was told to stop using the old Cstoll xml tool (fix database ) because it wasn't needed any more .....when i did that it was the most stable rendition yet .....i think that was 5.0 rev 2 .....anyway updating to rev 4 and 6 has been flawless

i do a lot of multitasking even at the club even at mobil gigs and 5.0 keeps getting more stable and is considerably better than 4.3 ......

it seems like in general it uses a little more cpu / resources than it used to , but is more solid

i have a weak video card and in spite of that i can rip discs , or download trax while playing music vids or sonique visuals with the music .....i can also analyze simultaneously , so that is really a lot going on ..... i have 2 gigs of ram and about 35 processes running .....

when i went to 5.0 rev 6 , for the first time , i did not even hesitate ......

i just have a hideous store bought HP lappy , no shuttle ......your system seems better than mine .... i just trusted it would be a smooth upgrade when i went to 5.0.......

i can understand your concern but i don't think you need to keep a separate 4.3 .....

if you do that try to get some input from Cstoll , or Cyder or Cel or Mp3jrick or Norway ......

i think you will probably be perfect , but just to be cautious , give yourself 48 hours b4 any upcoming club shift or mobile gig and you will be able to give the new upgrade a thorough check out ......

Thanx, chuck. Gonna install soon, too. My main concern is my g/f who has been using 4.3 flawlessly on the shuttle
may want to have 4.3 sitting in the same computer with 5.0rev6, coz I know if she gets one glitch, and I'm not around, she'll feel much more comfortable at first by starting up 4.3, and if she learns to like 5.0rev6, I know she'll then keep and use it and dump out 4.3.

But for now, and I know there was some earlier thread discussion on this, I wanna keep both on the shuttle, but want to get the initial installation of 5.0rev6 just right while keeping 4.3 and not having any specific problems that may arise by having both installed.

Can anyone advise me or send me to those older threads on the subject? Cstoll? sky? djcel?

Thank you.

Bryantpb,

why don't you PM cstoll, with your concerns. I think he could help you alot, the teamers are not around as often as they was. I think there may be some testing going on *cough* VDJ 5.1 *cough*.

Great! aRE YOU SAYING NOBODY ELSE HAS EVER TRIED TO PUT BOTH VERSIONS ON THE SAME COMPUTER.
oops sorry bout caps. sorry.

If someone has, please comment.

If those dev team guys are too busy, then i shouldn't bother them with pm's; right?

bryantpb I THINK you will run into Registry keys problems
they share to many of the same files.

Rename your 4.x executable from virtualdj.exe to virtualdj_4.exe
Install version 5

----
Thing to note:

Your 4.x database moves to the new My Documents->VirtualDJ folder and is used from there. This is do to the registry entry changing to the new Home location for v5 and no you can't split the registry....
----

btw, during beta testing of v5 and for a couple months after v5 released, I ran this configuration at our night club because I wanted to make sure everything was right with our v5 database and my other DJ wasn't ready to learn the differences in v5. So Yes this can be run side by side very easily.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, and what do you mean I cannot "split the registry", is there a need to?
When I now use 4.3 in this arrangement, are you saying the 4.3 database.xml is in another location. As I thought it was just copied to the other location and renamed ver5database.xml for ver5 use?

Can you clear this up for me?

Also, yuou're saying that there will be no registry key problems either??

I know i sound dumb, but just wanna be sure so my g/f can deal with both at the same station.
She doesn't plan on running both together, just wants them both present while she learns 5.0rev6 or 5.1.

After you do the V5 install, and you go to the Program Files\\VirtualDJ directory and rename the V4 database file there... you will find that everything using the v4 exe still reads the database.

Reason - During the install of V5 the HomeFolder registry key value is changed to your My Documents->VirtualDJ folder. The install also copies the v4 database file and the mp3database.txt (Search DB) to the new Home Folder location. It USES (does not rename the file) to build the new V5 database(s) [Greater explanation is provided in the V5 manual].

So the V4 database stays intact and when you launch the V4 exe it reads the registry for the HomeFolder which the goes to the new changed value of MyDocuments->VirtualDJ.

I hope this is more clear.

Very clear and thank you, CStoll. However, when I install ver5, do I need to point it to a separate folder (As I once did with having ver4 installed and ver3 on the sane computer), or do I just install ver5 to the folder (same as ver4) that it will originally point me to during the installation process? That is my big fear right now?

No you don't have to point it to a different folder (and I would not recommend it). That is the reason for renaming the existing virtualdj.exe to virtualdj_v4.exe

Also, don't forget to create a shortcut to the virtualdj_v4.exe on the Desktop.

Thanx a bunch CStoll, as of lately we've been having some good luck with VDJ's newer versions.

If you remember me from way back i was the original "please stay with 3.4 guy" :)

I'm slowly making ground here, but moving forward.
