Sujet: advice on laptop specs

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Hi guys thinking about going over to a laptop for portability issues, would the below spec for a laptop be good enough for vdj, i'm audio only by the way, no video.
is there any weak links there???

Microsoft Operating System Genuine Windows XP Home Edition

Memory 2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)

Those are some nice specs. My lappy is significant in most those specs except my HD is 40GB smaller. However it has a 1.73GHz processor. To be honest I'm not sure how big of a difference it should make. With 2 processors however you won't have to worry to much about that. I'd recommend, if you plan on playing any PC games or doing anything that requires a decent graphics card to go ahead and invest in a laptop with a decent video card. My laptop has a integrated card. However it is VERY limiting as far as what games I can play. Not saying I can't because I can run games such as Swat 4 and Halo on high quality with no frame loss. However, it won't even load a game like Halo 2. Not sure why.

Another thing to consider is the HD space. I have a 120GB and it's quickly close to full. The 160GB will give you more space, but you'll realize that after adding your whole library of music that a big-chunk of your HD memory is gone. OR just by you an external HD to go with the internal and you'll be set.

1.4 ghz processor is ok and would work but the higher the better. 1.7 or 1.8 to be the least. The ram at 2 gigs or more and the size of the Hd inside the computer doesnt matter to me because i use external HDs for all my music. No slow down for me

Looks good to me too. Don't worry about the internal HD space, just use an external. The advantage to an external is that you can get a much bigger hard drive, and if your system drive dies, you don't lose everything. Trust me, the dual core makes a big difference.

i dont personally thing your spec is good enough. like mentioned, at minimum 1.8Ghz, personally I would say 2.0 even for audio only. if you plan to use if professionally, you need something reliable and not minimal. i would also strongly suggest a 7200rpm hard drive to ensure that when you record and/or play heavier wav files, etc that you dont have to drop bits because the drive cant keep up with 2x read and 1x write. i had that problem all the time with my old acer laptop which was similar spec but 1.8 ghz. it simply wasnt fast enough machine at all and crashed quite often.

Im running an IBM T61 with 4gb Ram, no IRQ conflicts no freezes
I have been using the IBM thinkpads from the T40 with VDJ v3 all the way through to the T61 v5.06 with not a hiccup with hardware or software.

Not much can be said about my HP or Dell which i have had troubles to no end with the same setup

Hope this helps ;-)

Once again I have to agree with PAZ... you should want at least 2.0 CPU and a 7200 HD if you plan on performing for money. (I have a Dell with this type of set up and it does the job with audio only)

are the below specs a better idea or still not ideal

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250 (2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2-cache)
3072MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (1x1024 + 1x2048 MB)
160GB (5400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
128MB nVidia GeForce8400M GS
15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display

will be used with xp and either a denon hd2500 or hc4500 as a controller

looks good to me, except two suggestions:

1) get a 7200rpm drive instead of 5400rpm
2) get at least 256mb (minimum) video card. no sense i bottlenecking a decent machine with low power video
