I must admit, I've been rather lucky with v5.0r6 so far. It's been really solid, even though I beat the snot out of it in testing before going live ;)
When I first went digital, I used to carry my whole cd collection and players around everywhere, but I eventually learned to trust the software more.
Nowadays, I usually carry just a CD-R or two with the event's sets on it, and a spare player out in the truck for backup. Thankfully, however, I've never needed them :D
Of course, you must consider that this backup strategy essentially means that you will not be taking requests, but you'll get through the gig.

I have had very good luck while using VDJ live. Only one time did I encounter an issue and that was more static related than PC/software. I too bring some CDs, just not as many as I used to bring. Unless the software becomes a catastrophic nightmare I have no intentions in going back to only CDs, or even vinyl. I recall when I switched from vinyl to CDs I used to bring a lot of records and it slowly shrunk in the amount until I was LP free. I imagine one day I will be CD free at all jobs too. I am just not there yet.

I use both cd players and VDJ. I love to have different options for a workaround in any case of trouble. When I used only cd players, years ago, I always had a spare player available for just in case. Hadn't had a problem with VDJ for years, so it is probably not needed to have the cd players.
Saw a dj last year whos pc system (not running VDJ) crashed during a very special song during a honeymoon. It took a couple of minutes befor his system was restarted and after 10 minutes of playing music (with cracks a plops) it went down again...

Speaking of eliminating CD's...can someone point out a unit that will accept memory sticks, flash drives or read external HD's and play through
a mixer when needed to use as a backup? Just as a backup..and wont put me in the poor house. I have 2 extra channels that are doing nothing and would like to streamline my equipment. One laptop is enough to maintain and to have something that would play MP3 and plug into my mixer would be sweet.
