Hi all,
At the moment my PC has got an Pentium 4, 3GHz HT processor, but it's the lowest score on my vista hardware thingy. So the question is, what's a decent upgrade?
I want something half decent, but not too expensive. What processor models do you think are the best value for money.
I need one that's an LGA 775 socket and the motherboard I've got is an abit sg-95.
http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=SG-95&fMTYPE=LGA775
Apparently, it can't take more than an 800MHz FSB.
Any suggestions or advice would be very welcome!
BTW- I'm in the UK, but if they're cheap in the US, they'll probably be cheap here too.
Thanks :)

dude,one thing about vista...
even if you build an entire new system with quad core proccessors, quad graphics and god knows how much of ram..you´ll still not get the highest score..but still..
back to the question
now the question is if yer mobo supports this
Intel Pentium® Dual-Core E2200 2.2GHz, Socket LGA775, 1MB, 800MHz, BOXED..as I can remember dual core support for intel mobos wasn´t availible until their 945 chipset..sombody please correct me if I´m wrong

I would suggest upgrading both the mobo and the processor. Having a mobo with a higher front side bus makes a big difference, especially for a program like VDJ. You shouldn't need to reload Windows after the upgrade, just update the drivers and you are off!

One Word: "Wolfdale" look it up
With a bios upgrade you should be good.
I love mine!

Thanks for the advice so far, I'm looking up "wolfdale" as we speak. So they are the codename for any E800 processor (according to wikipedia)? But they all have FSB of 1333MHz, so for that I would definately need to upgrade my mobo.
I didn't really want to to be honest, because I only got this one not so long ago. So now the question is, any reasonably priced mobos that can support those processors?
BTW. Here is the hardware performace information:
Processor: 4.2
RAM: 4.4
Desktop Graphics: 5.9
Gaming Graphics: 5.1
Primary Hard Disk Speed: 5.3
So I thought the processor would be a good place to start.

I'm just looking up the E2200 now, seems pretty good price. Do people think I'd be better doing a mobo upgrade as well though to get a better processor? It just comes down to the cash, and what's gonna be cheaper in the long run.

Accordint to Abit, your MB will only supoort the Pentium Dual Core D-8XX, D-9XX, Core Duo E-2XXX, Core 2 Duo E-4XXX series
Out of those choices you will be happiest with any of the E-4xxx's that fit into your budget. If money is tight, I run 4 PC's all running the D-940's and can't make one complaint. (they do need good cooling though), the only problem is the D series are hard to come by.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at the E4xxx series when i get a spare moment. I guess the E4xxx is going to be a better processor than E 2200? (if the prices arn't too expensive).
I think I'm gonna rule the wolfdale processors out at the mo, they would be cool, but I don't think I can afford the cash for one and a new mobo right now.
