Hellooooo
So I'm on the verge of purchasing vdj and upgrading from my current setup of the m-audio x-session pro + torq LE
I'd like to go the vdj/controller route, as i don't have enough money to go straight to tcv, the eventual goal.
what would you say is the single best controller for use with vdj?
i've considered buying the Numark Total Control (the packaged cue was appealing, but seems to have significantly less features and more bugs than straight VDJ).
i've also been looking at the Vestax VCI-100 and the M-Audio Xponent.
I am a straight mix dj but would like to try a little scratching eventually. I play mostly house and nu-rave with a little bit of disco, hip hop and r&b thrown in.
I would like something that looks professional.
Also, having a built in soundcard is also nice, since I have the Numark DJio and its drivers are incompatible with my version of OSX. And yes, I am running on a macbook pro.
Thoughts? I'm sure this has been asked before and sorry if it's irritating. I just want to make sure I spend my money wisely.

dont like the hercules products nor the total control
to tell you the truth, i dont like any of the all in one solutions such as that
this isnt spam but i actually like the Numark icdx for it's full featured and you can switch which deck it controls (same $ by buying one only)
it's my favorite controller strictly, when you get into scratching, get turns or a hybrid
i have a numark icdx if you wanna consider buying it, saving for something else

How much for the icdx??

The iCDX is a nice midi controller but it is NOT a soundcard. Same goes for the Total Control, no soundcard. If you are looking for a true all in one the Herc MKII is very common. I personally would wait for the RMX from Herc though it is due to be released in April I believe.

I've been looking at the Herc products but it seems that the controls are severely cramped. Any thoughts on this?
Posté Mon 18 Feb 08 @ 3:27 pm
The RMX is larger..that is why I recommend waiting for it.....

Damn. That RMX is a beast. Looks like the best thing going to be on the market, and for only $350 with vdj packaged. def sticking with the current rig until this comes out.

I see a lot of people ripping on it, though by merit of the fact that it's Hercules. They're probably running SSL, though. Don't want to get laughed out of the club, though. Thoughts?

i owned a mk2 and it was severely cramped, felt like it was gonna break in half, the jog wheels meant nothing and only thing i COULD use it for was as a sound card - i returned it the next day
icdx has more functionality just because it is made to be a controller and a decent cd player as well
wait for some reviews before the new herc.... wait for what people say about the quality
im trying to sell my icdx for around 300 or possibly 250 for you because you still need to buy the software

Most hardware including the Hercules is good enough to rock a club, the difference between controller A and controller B is usually little in function, but the brand name, image of the controller, build quality/last-ability of the unit are usually what determine the products credibility in most peoples eyes.
I've spoken to a beta tester of the RMX, and he tells me that units soundcard hasn't been upgraded from the MK2 (the outputs quality/volume is great for home, but only passable in a club in my opinion). Overall he informed me that the unit was "good for home use only", and for a unit at this price from this manufacturer, I'd say that's about right, you could use it in a club with success if "getting the job done" is your only concern.
Personally I'd rather go for the VCI-100 with a dedicated DJ soundcard, if people laugh at me using this set-up I'll just laugh back or direct the smoke machine towards their face.

From everything I have read the RMX is built on technology that is already used in the MKII. It is just put into a more heavy duty casing, so it would get the respect it deserves.
On the topic of respect.....do not allow anyone..ever to belittle you if you decide to go with a small controller instead of a large rack, or coffin full of turn tables. If you walk in with a palmtop PC and a Wii controller and put on a good show that is all that matters. This "people laughing at me" mentality is stupid, in my opinion. I started DJing 25 years ago..and do not miss in the least carrying 25 orange crates full of vinyl to do a 6 hour show somewhere. Nor do I miss amplifiers which weighed a ton and over heated if mis-handled.
Embrace technology, true story. Most gun fights in the old west were not won by the fastest draw. They were won by keeping their cool, and by technology. So, keep your cool...and select what is best for YOU not those who might laugh.

Four years ago i made the same step and left all the cd-cases at home.... my oldest son (one year old at that time) was a great cd juggler, but never managed to get MY cd's back in the cases :-( .... So every night i said a prayer to the DJ God: Please let me have all my cd's when i need them !!!!
Since then i haven't missed it for a split second. Nowadays in my little dj booth i unplug the mkIII's, and make room for 'ye olde laptop' and my Hercules MKII.... In the very beginning people stare at me, and fellow dj's (probably wannabees because when they can manage to come to you they haven't got a venue to play in he he he) curse to me that I'ma disgrace for all DJ's... However they keep coming tome and for the same mixes time and time again.... What they don't know is that alle the mixes are LIVE :-)
I like to please a crowd, sometimes piss them off, but most of all: THEY love the music that I'm playing.... no matter if it's vinyl, cd, mp3, ogg or.. hey : when the power fails, maybe with my harmonica..... (not) They don't care how it ends up in the speakers, as long as they can dance and have a good time !
Joop
