Ok, The laptop I'm using to do video at the moment was something that I bought for Audio only (graphics card with shared memory, cheap etc).
But I thought I'd give video a try before going for something with a high end card, and the results have been amazing! This laptop has a Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset, 2gb of ram, 1.7ghz core 2 duo, and I'm ouputing VOB's (DVD rips) on a large screen with no performance issues at all.
It's working really nicely, the videos load fast, there is no hang when loading a video on the second deck, no lag/frame jumping issues etc.
I just thought I'd tell you all as it's kind of ironic, that some have spent thousands trying to get video working well and have failed to get good results, but I'm doing it with a budget laptop and it's working very well.
More info:
Physical Memory: 2037 MB
Minimum Graphics Memory: 8 MB
Maximum Graphics Memory: 224 MB
Graphics Memory in Use: 40 MB
Processor: x86 family 6 Model 15 Stepping 2
Processor Speed: 1729 MHZ
Perhaps it's because I'm not using one of the problematic Nvidea cards? I now know that mixing videos doesn't require a NASA PC.

Interesting.
I've just ordered a new notebook for Video mixing (due to be delivered today)
However my current notebook, a HP NC600- Pentium 1.6m - 1gb Ram - Radeon 9600 64mb. ... struggles with video, i get about 3 fps with it.
My card is a little faster than yours, but yours has more memory available to if it needs it, but with slower transfer rates.
What resolutions do you have for your primary and secondary displays?
Would be intersting for other guys with the same integrated GPU to post their experiences with Video.

The first laptop i tried VDJ on was a second hand Compaq from ebay. It cost me £125 and had 1GB RAM and integrated graphics. In the BIOS the graphics were set to 16MB and I used video fine with no issues at all. There was an option to increase the video memory to 32MB but doing that made it worse. I found 16MB worked better!!
I had to let a couple of other DJ's inspect it because they could not believe I was running video on 16MB of shared RAM!
It wasn't powerful enough to run any effects, but all transitions were smooth outputting to 10 Plasmas.
I used a sound blaster 5.1 usb card for sound.
I have since gone on to spend £500 on a Fuitsu, £1200 on an HP, £1300 on a Toshiba and apart from the Toshiba, I wish i hadn't bothered really! lol

Bren do you use Vista?

Yes I use Vista.

That might be it, I guess. Lots of folks are saying that vista handles video better for whatever reason (despite its other shortcomings performance-wise). Maybe it's directx 10...
I've got an ATI with 64MB dedicated, but I learned something recently, in the fine print...It's dynamic! In other words, it also uses available RAM when it needs it. I didn't know that before. Anyway, I'm getting ready to add another .5 GB, going from 1.5 to 2, and see what happens. I still use xp pro. Hey, who knows? It couldn't hurt to have the extra ram even if it doesn't have any effect on the video.

I'll also add that I can run 3D effects/transitions with ease.

Vista has a totally new way of addressing Shared memory which makes it perform allot more effectively it features a totally new VIDEO and AUDIO API which also speeds the loading of audio and video but also increases the quality and smoothness of video files.
Please note that the effectiveness will vary between manufacturers hardwares.

I would have to attribute this to good, clean living. The gods have smiled upon you, give thanks.
I just hate to give Vista credit for much of anything. : )

When I buy my laptop. I'm going to take the install disc in and my video files with me... and the first laptop that plays video flawlessly will be baught. Forget about this trial time period crap and having to take it back.
