Sujet: making the switch, need help choosing a laptop...PLEASE HELP?

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

I'm finally making the switch to virtual this summer, and I need some input before I invest in a laptop. Certainly I'm interested in getting the most bang for my buck, but I also don't want to have to worry about reliability. That being said, I am wanting to go all the way with virtual, and will need the rig to run video mixing smoothly. My questions basically boil down to : 'what is the priority order for components? RAM/Graphics card/CPU, etc...where should I spend and where can I save? Also, I'm looking at a couple laptops specifically, several of which are in the gateway P series...they've gotten good reviews on Cnet.com and are priced great considering the components put into them. Does anyone have any experience with this line? If so can you recommend or not? Thanks in advance to everyone for helping me out with this!

P.S. On a side note, what exactly is the difference between Virtual DJ and Virtual Vinyl?

lol ignore that P.S. ..... figured it out.

Once you go Mac, you never go back

Yeah I've heard that from everyone I know who's converted. I would probably like to eventually go that route, but macs are SO much more expensive. I was really hoping to go a little more budget friendly, being that this will be my first laptop and foray into the virtual world.

The whole mac thing is so overrated. You get a LOT more for the same money when getting a windows based laptop. Have a look at the Acer Aspire 8920. I own one and it runs rings around the macbook pro..

just took a look at it, thanks for the recommendation! Looks like a good product, got a nice review on cnet as well. My only concern would be the slower processor and HD rmp...that's why I'm looking so intently at the Gateway 172s-fx. Apparently Acer and Gateway have merged ( I was previously unaware) so it should be the same quality right?

rpm, not rmp. Apparently I'm lysdexic.

Honestly, anyone with any input on this subject please weigh in!!! I'm desperate to gleam as much knowledge as I can before I go out and spend my hard earned cash! Success/horror stories, setups that work or don't, whatever..I need to hear it all

djphilthy, have you thought about any of the Toshiba range of laptops, I've been using a Satellite Pro for over a year now and I haven't had any bother from it. It not powerfull enought to do video (which sorts me as I don't do it yet), but's it's never let me down.

Right now I'm looking into a new laptop, and something that can handle Video mixing, this Toshiba Model has court my eye. Looks really nice aswell.

checked it out, looks decent, but I'm wanting a slightly larger screen, and the video card would worry me......only 128 MB dedicated? I'd worry about lag with video mixing.

For basic video mixing it would be OK, I Know it's better to have 256mb and above,

but there are some models in the Toshiba range that have all the feature's you need, I think very higher of them. Can't you tell I love Toshiba, LOL.

lol just a little! I was actually talking to someone else at my gig last night and he owns a Tosh, maybe I'll take another look at them.

Nice one, I don't think you'll regret it if you decided to get one,

maybe I'll convert everyone to Toshiba one day. LOL.
