Hi,

I'm trying out VirtualDJ 5 and I have it loaded on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite model P205-S7402 running Windows Vista Home Premium as the OS. The laptop has a built in Realtek sound card with 4 ports (headphones-out, mic-in, HDMI-in, and digital optical-in) I connect my laptop to the amp/speakers using the headphone jack with a cable that has a male 1/8" stereo headphone plug on one side that splits into red/white RCA jacks on the other. The VDJ sound setup tab is set up as follows:

Inputs: None
Outputs: Headphones
Sound card(s): Mono separated
Sound card: Primary Sound Driver
Output channels: Master: Left chan / Headphones: Right chan

The output from VDJ sounds fine over the speakers, but when I connect a USB headphone set, (for master/cueing listening purposes) all sound comes out of the USB headphones and not the analog jack of the laptop. I did some research and found out that the OS of laptops will play all sound either analog or digital, with the default being digital. Is there any way to overide this, so when using VDJ I can use the USB headphones as the master, while the headphone jack is used as the output for my amp?

I considered get a splitter from Radio Shack for the laptop's headphone jack but this doesn't really help any, because I still won't have master headphone functionality, and by doing this I'll be losing one channel of sound to my amp. Please advise.

Thanks ! : -)

you should just be able to plug in to your mixer, its been a while since i had to do this. if still no let me know and ill get back to you. get rid of the usb headphones.

After reading a ton of posts on this forum, I've discovered that I have to get an external sound card, either USB or Firewire, to effectively give me two analog outputs. I can then choose 'two sound cards' in VDJ and point the master to the headphones (external sound card), and the output to the built-in sound card (just like it's doing now). I'm a newbie, I don't have a mixer board, I was looking to just use the mixer skin that comes with the program and practice. I'm going to bite the bullet and get the full version, I've also realized (through forum reading) that the trial version limits functionality, (which it should) so I won't be able to use headphones to cue up and pre-listen to tracks regardless of which sound card I purchase. I'm also hoping that the VDJ program gives P.A. functionality to a microphone, so I will be able to address the crowd over the speakers (which is possible on a real hardware mixer.) The forum posts on this topic have not looked promising, however. Thanks for your response, I now know I have to use my regular headphones, not the USB ones. I really appreciate the input!

Glad I search, because I have the same Issue. I only make since that I should be able to CUE TT2 while TT1 is playing. I'm able to mix(somewhat effectively just looking @ the music bar @ the top), and I just feel I'll be that much better if I can cue up the next song.

You have to realise that the USB headphones act as a USB sound card and will override your primary sound card settings.

With this in mind you should be able to tweak the Windows sound settings in the control panel.

Cheers,

Roy

no, wait! you said you were using Realtek right? as with any other sound driver, you need to set your preferences in the Realtek audio manager too. otherwise the driver will override VDJ. so, you DON'T need a second soundcard, just follow my steps:

my options in VDJ:

inputs: none
outputs: headphones
soundcards: 2 cards (don't be deceived, i'm only using the one on my PC)
soundcard: Speakers (Realtek HD audio rear output)
second card: primary sound driver

in realtek, on VISTA (note: the one's in vista and XP are very different drivers, i'll explain later.)
open up the Realtek HD audio Manager
go to advanced settings (in the top right corner)
and click the lower one: "let the audio devices play two audio streams simultaniously" (note: i tried to translate this, but i didn't get very far)

on XP you don't have an advanced tab, and it's just blue with all the inputs shown.
now, here are the steps you should take and how i got it to work:
plug your speakers in the back as you normally would. check if they show up
go to the right hand side of the window, you should see a small round icon with a wrench in it. click it. it should offer 2 options (i'm on the PC with vista now, in 2 days i'm back on the PC with XP, i'll update this thread then), click the lower one. now if you plug your headphones in, it should show a dialog asking for what you plugged in. click "front speakers" or something similar.

for the settings in VirtualDJ:
inputs: none
outputs: headphones
soundcards: 4.1 card
soundcard: RealtekHD rear output
output channels: master: back output
headphones: front output
i'm not sure of this one, because i had my speakers plugged in the front, and my headphones in the back, lol. anyway, play around for a bit, you should be able to handle it :P

XP option 2:

BUT, if it still doesn't work, and you have a 4.1 card (or greater, in my case a 7.1 card, and realtek is configured for 7.1)
plug your speakers in the back, as you normally would.
plug your headphones in the black input in the back above the green input where your normal speakers are plugged into
go to the Realtek HD audio manager, and choose in the dropdown menu in the top left: "4.1 speakers", or something similar.

for the settings in VirtualDJ:
inputs: none
outputs: headphones
soundcards: 4.1 card
soundcard: RealtekHD rear output
output channels: master: back output
headphones: center output
that should do it.

if you have anything bigger than 2 speakers (like me, a 5.1 sound system :D) you DO need a second soundcard, they are very cheap, just something that adds an extra output. i use a "USB 3D audio soundcard".

pff, well, that was a long write :P i hope it's useful

NightHawk, i did all those settings and it worked with the PCDJ UDJ-1 headphones. I messed with the settings and i can now preview songs with the USB headphones. I have an old ass HP laptop and it worked for me. Just i have to be careful because if a song is cue'd on the interface i can hear it in the phones but if i cross fade to that same side you can hear through speakers so i got to be careful...other than that use NightHawks suggestions...USB phones can work and you dont gotta buy a new card.

One downfall is the volume for the speakers is low and cant be adjusted. The computer buttons crank up the sound in the phones but not the speakers.. i hope the amp handles that

i also have a problem deviding which headphones to buy the usb or the primary.am a newbie and just want to use my laptop to dj mayde progress at a later stage.
