Just to open up VDJ and have it do nothing is running 30% CPU power. When I exit the program it goes down to 0% CPU power. Is this normal?

Not unless you have video enabled at the time with something running such as Sonique or Clipbank.
Posté Wed 16 Sep 09 @ 2:33 pm
Are you running VirtualDJ with the skin maximized. This can cause this high CPU usage.
Posté Wed 16 Sep 09 @ 2:36 pm
I have minimized the screen and I still have the same CPU useage.
The video screens are black with nothing running on them.

Can someone check to see how there CPU is running when it is just sitting there with no videos. There is a meter on the top right on some skins.

running on my living room laptop with no videos and just cue open i get one maybe 2 green bars in cues cpu meter. you have to have something else going on. is your laptop tweaked? wifi disable? do you have a virus?
Posté Wed 16 Sep 09 @ 4:24 pm
I have tweaked it alot. All services are off that i do not need. When I have another program that measures the CPU and when I exit VDJ it goes down to 0. I don't use the laptop on the internet, so I don t think it is a virus.

It must be something going on in my laptop. VDJ on my desktop uses little CPU.

About the maximize; don't minimize it, click the restore icon instead (the one between close and minimize) and see if this resolves your laptop CPU issue.
Posté Wed 16 Sep 09 @ 5:09 pm
No , it is still the same.
Posté Wed 16 Sep 09 @ 5:18 pm
I wish I knew what was causing this in my laptop.
Posté Wed 16 Sep 09 @ 6:57 pm
I don't use a laptop, but I don't care how much CPU is being used. Sometimes it is at near 100%, as long as it continues to play, I don't care. That is what having the reserve is for, to use when needed. I have a lot going on, and my machine never cuts off, and I am not paranoid watching some meter. When it cuts off, then you worry.

true, but if VDJ can run more effeciently I want to make sure that it does.
Posté Wed 16 Sep 09 @ 10:09 pm
Ok, I just opened VDJ on my laptop, and task manager says I'm using 5-10%, with 82 processes running. When I close VDJ I'm using 0-7%.
Posté Wed 16 Sep 09 @ 10:34 pm
damn 82 processes? wth you have going on?

billyzee, there is a site called DPC Latency Checker where you can determine the maximum DPC latency that occurs on your Windows system and thus enables you to check the real-time capabilities of your computer. You need to download it (It's free). Read up on it as it helped me with hipcups and freezing. The site is www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml Good luck!

If you dont start video, does the cpu usage stay around %0? Even black video windows will pull power, even if no video is running. Your tv screens will be using hardware rendering (Graphics cpu, not main) but the video preview windows on your laptop screen will use your main cpu to render, even if no video is playing. only way to check it to make sure "Enable video" is turned off in config/video first then check cpu usage.

Assuming you're running Windows:
Right-click on teh task bar and select Task Manager from the menu.
Click on the processes tag, and then click the CPU column heading twice.
Your busiest processes/applications will now be at the top. Monitor what is giving the highest CPU readings. It is the same? does it change? is it VDJ?
Try starting this before you start VDJ and then keep an eye on other processes that may kick in at the same time.
Another thing (and just off the top of my head) - what happens if you turn video off? Does your laptop have dedicated memory for the video card or is it using shared memory.
The problem with shared memory is that you may force windows to start swapping to disk if you use up all of your RAM, this could also cause the CPU usage to shoot up while your software is apparently doing nothing.
How much RAM do you have? If you are using Vista/Win 7 and have a USB flash drive of 1-2Gb, try using that as "ReadyBoost" memory which will increase your RAM and should stop the disk swapping if you have low main memory.
You can also check your memory usage in Task Manager under the performance tab.
I'm starting to look for a new laptop and only recently have I seen machines being offered with dedicated 512Mb video RAM being offered. The new Dell Vostro does for under £800...
Hope this helps,
Roy

I have tried the DPC Latency Checker and I have Big problems. Continued red spikes when I play video up to 4000. Then I closed VDJ and the red bars maxed out to 16000. Loaded VDJ and I got green bars until I played a video. Audio was fine as it stayed in the green.
I have Windows XP , Sound card NVidia 8800M GTX GeForce
I have tried Disabling everything in Device manager but nothing helped.
