when i pinch myself it hurts. does that make me real?

I must agree that nothing beats, nor compares to the feel of vinyl at the touch of your fingertips. Many of us started our dj lives with vinyl, and in many cases, we quickly moved into the world of CD’s.
I’ve had conversations with many dj’s, who swear that a dj has to be a vinyl dj otherwise you are not a dj, and while I understand their point of view, I also think that as a dj, one should evolve. Why get stuck in the Neanderthal era, when technology offers you a lot more options.
As some of you have stated in here, a dj is someone who plays, and match beats different tracks to keep a continuous beat, a continuous danceable beat. One who can match beat by ear and one who is able to adapt to a broader set of options. I respect dj’s that are still using vinyl, and I don’t take any credit off any dj that uses any type of software to spin.
However, I really hate those persons that use the software to auto mix and call themselves dj’s. Those individuals, don’t have the skills, the knowledge, and most important, the passion to be a dj. It is because of people like these, which gives a bad name to other dj’s that use software to mix the way it’s supposed to be done.
I use Virtual dj because it is so convenient to go and spin with a flash drive as opposed to carrying a case full of CD’s, especially when making long road trips in the hot summer days when your cd’s could get ruined. In the other hand, I still love using cd’s, and I don’t mind doing both virtual or cd’s.
I love the fact that you can use timecodes to control your music and gives that feel of cd’s, instead of using a MIDI, which I have nothing against that either, I’m a proud owner of a behringer BCD2000.
Being a dj is not so much about what type of system you use, if you’re old school or a new generation of dj. Being a dj is about being able to keep the party going, being able to make the people move, being able to stimulate, through your mixes, your audience.
I detest bottom feeders, and I think that there are many out there who spin and call themselves dj’s only to make money. Being a dj is more than a passion, more than a culture. Being a true dj, is having the music flow through you, and being able to release it out to the audience no matter if you use turntables, cdj’s, or MIDI’s.
I am a dj, and I use all of these items to mix.

PD; if you find any punctuation or grammatical errors, remember, I am a dj, not an English major.

I started with two 78 rpm grammaphones with a nail for a needle and a big eared dog sitting next to me, several years later graduated to a pair of "close and play" record players and a crank to change pitch on my 45rpms......not quite.....but at 48 and having used virtually every piece of equipment INCLUDING reel to reel, cassettes, vinyl, cd's, 3/4" video cassettes (talk about a HUGE player), even a pitch controlled sony mini disc player (still got it to this day!).

What is really amazing at 48 and having been in the business since December of 1980 is that this arguemnet is still going on......give it a rest already!

I think we also need to realize that the definition of a "DJ" is changing as we speak..
If you try and say this guy is 'real' and this guy is 'fake'. I can take your exact same arguements and prove YOU are not 'real'

Example..
I have a DJ friend (lets call him DJ 'A' ) that uses mixmiester.. 1.) he gets major rave reviews from all his clients, matter of fact he charges more and gets more business then I do 2.) he meets all the 'requirements' that people have mentioned.. >he knows his music, he has passion, he keeps a party going, and he stimulates his audience with the music he plays..

Is he a REAL DJ?

if your answer is no.. be careful..
cause you just defined a 'REAL DJ' to be someone who manually mixes the music.. and if thats the case, if thats your definition.. Then you must also agree that a DJ that doesnt use a computer is more of a 'REAL DJ' then YOU!

matter of fact.. that can mean the guy that uses two home CD players is 10 times more 'real' then you.. no automatic cue points.. no instant start, no variable speed, no 'wave form', no '1 second loading of songs'...

or

if you want..

we can define a 'Real DJ' by talent (and not 'skilzs' or equipment)

OK, this is a bit off-topic but I decided to share it with you since there's a lot of talk about hardware :)

I bet none of you/us has DJ'd with this: Laser Vinyl Turntable

Yeah, you heard me! It's a frickin' CD-player that reads vinyls. Now how cool/dumb/crazy/ is that? :D

Kinda close to my "close and play" phonograph...'cept with a lazer.

How about a more interesting topic....MIlli Vanilli, real or fake?

check this out, when i was in 10th grade i used to record songs from the radio and splice them together to make a continuous
30 minute set. then i would take the tapes and go to the park and open my trunk and jam that tape all day long.i would get 40 or 50
people a week dancing and playing basketball. those were my first gigs. i went from there to the pep rallys at school to my first paying gig ''the prom'' . the 70's those were the days. i still have the tapes.

Hehe, keeping it oldschool back in the early 90s... Happy days, but I wouldn't go back to this!

as technology changes so should the title. i suggest "dude that plays" the music as opposed to being called a dj.

some of us are called ''the talent'' i'm still a dj, cause it's in my name.

I Love Vdj!! and the funny thing was I only looking for a mp3 mixing Deal and that it would be easy to carry arround....then i saw on You Tube someone mixing videos with VDJ a heard how FAR vinyl Emulation had gone! and i had to try it!

I think some are taking themselves too seriously. You've been around 25+ years. Excellent. You have experience that some of us newbies hope to gather someday. You've been around 25+ days. That's cool too. You're learning with the technology that's available today. Good for you (including me). The concepts are the same. The drive is the same. The enthusiasm is the same. Only the technology has changed. Someday, not too far from now, a new format will develop where I will want to puke at how easy it will be to both acquire and subsequently beatmatch music. In my mind, I'll just have to go back to today and remember how much the turntabilists and CD jocks secretly (and not so secretly) detested me because I came across an interface that was incredibly user friendly and allowed me to dabble in an art that I may have otherwise found too daunting.

Sorry to spoil it for the old timers (whom I actually hppe to be someday), but there willl always be the new to push out the old. Gift and a curse. It's a fast lane business: Either keep up, or get out of the way.

move bitch get out the way, get out the way!

Jump on it!

all i see and hear is boasting, reflecting, wishing, wanting to be, or hoping to have, whether u can rock a crowd or not the way someone else think u are supposed to, u are a DJ.......whether u do it for money, passion or just a waggonist......u are a DJ.....whether u like VDJ, TRAKTOR...HERCULES.NS7.....PIONEER..TECHNICS...U ARE A DJ.......the morale of the story is.....once you type in this forum...chances are.......u guessed it.....U ARE A DJ.....

.PRACTICE AND ENJOY...

With over 35 years in this industry i like to think people regard me as one of the elder statesman, lol, truth is I'm probably known as that old git playing the music. And that is my point, from all those years back from moving what felt like tons and probably was of vinyl to lifting in comparison a few lbs/kgs of today's technology people are still putting there hands into the till or their pockets and handing the cash over to listen to me play the music.

Don't listen to anyone who is pretentious enough to say it's got to be played on vinyl to be real, you make the sounds in the room for 2 people or 2,000 on whatever device and they are enjoying themselves, you are the DJ.

@ Chibie.. Whats up with the quote ? What are try to say with here we go again. Is there something wrong with what i wrote.. ?

Caliente, sorry, I should have used a different example, I totally missed your point. I should never vent my frustration at others on this site as we all use VDJ... my bad.

To explain my frustration:

I am so tired of hearing "paid my dues, learned the hard way, earned my stripes, I used to do this.. etc, etc," type comments that I am sure we all have to put up with from time to time while working with current computer technology. I just did not expect this to show up here and I over reacted with out lokking at the whole picture.

Once again, I am sorry if I offened anyone on this site.

No problem Chibie.. Its cool my friend..Yesterday, i was hanging out with my old school friend, he's one of the hottest dj's in New York for latin music. " DJ rated R " Many years ago, he used a Denon dual cd player and now he uses the Denon HC4500. They guy is well respected in many clubs and the radio staions. This is to show many that You dont have to use turntables to rock a crowd.

I find to rock a crowd small golf ball sized pieced of granit work the best. They are small enought to control where you throw them and hard enough to do serious damage when they hit something.....just call me Dj Stoneage

Could this be a new DJing term?

Getting the crowd "stonned"!

I think almost anyone on this would answer yes to the Real DJ question. It would be more interesting to see if anyone here thinks that they are not a real DJ and why.

Yes BTW.
