No, the crossfader needs to be as fake_action.
Relaunch the software, so that the crossfader of the software goes to 50% (by default). Dont move the crossfader from the skin.
Also make sure the CF A and CF B are in the proper position. E.g. if you wish to crossfade between deck 1 and 2 you need to have CF A to CH2 and CF B to CH3.
See the SOund setup from here.. http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/VMS4%20/%20VMS4.1.html

CROSSFADER shows this on the mapper
fake_crossfader & video_crossfader
still no crossfader action, it moves on the skin but doesn't squelch sound on either deck

This is suspect. The Crossfader (Audio) is Hardware based - so so Software action at that point. The fake_crossfader just moves the item on the Screen but does nothing with the Sound.
Can you see the movement of the fader on the Screen ? If yes it must be somethng with the knobs on the front. If the fader does not moves in the Software it means that it does not get MIDI signal then maybe there is something broken in your device.

Leave the crossfader in the middle. Use only the volume faders. Do you have propper sound using just them ? What midilogs are those ?
If the 2 midilogs you use are 2 and 3 then the crossfader CF A and CF B (front switchers) should be in 2 and 3.
Are you sure you have the right Sound Setup ?
Inputs ..None
Output.. Ext Mixer
Sound card VMS4 or ASIO

It turned out to be an issue with the VMS4.1 itself! I have two units so after exhaustively checking and rechecking all the sound settings, mappers and controls on the unit all the issues I had earlier in this thread had been solved but no deals on the damned crossfader! Then I thought why not try the other VMS4.1 I have. Plugged it in and all is well with everything now including the crossfader! I guess the other unit is defective?
Thanks so much for all of your effort DJDad! I really appreciate it.

Rude ... sorry to sound a bit 'basic' ... but on the one you had problems with, did you have the crossfader selection knobs on the front set to the correct channels as djDad mentioned?

@Chris, no problem but yes I had the switches in the right places. But now I have another problem. Latency in prelistening on my headphones and latency on microphone output, it sounds like an echo. It's hard to prep the next track when there is latency in the headphones. What is going on now? I have had this issue before but sometimes it just works fine and like lately, the latency. Please help, I start a new residency tonight... I appreciate all you guys have done to help thus far

Latency in Output (Master) depends on the ASIO latency of the AA Asio driver. Latency in headphones is practically close to zero, as VMS4 is actually a hardware mixer.
What is the selected latency you have in the AA ASIO Settings ? It should be around 8ms. If you could get any lower than that, i am sure it would help, but still in order not having performance issues, you may also need to optimize your computer

Nothing to do. It is natively supported in the Professional Full version.
