I'm beating my head against the wall. I just bought 3 new Dell XPS laptops. Bought these for the only purpose of using VDJ for mobile work.
I uploaded music and Connected hard drives, installed VDJ and popping and crackling has begun, i didn;t realise this was a problem with dells lately or else i would've never ordered these.
I am currently on support tying to figure it out.
I already checked every resource here and on dell.com and haven't found a good answer yet.
If I can't get this figured out, these things are going straight back in the box and back to dell.
Anybody got a fix for this?
I'll gladly post up if i get something.

I am not sure it's a dell problem. I have a XPS, and just started testing yesterday. I am not finished yet but only seem to get pops and clicks when doing video. This is with the onboard and Gigaport sound cards. This is with and without ASIO. I am planning on testing all week to confirm. I will need to test for a few hours, to make sure it is stable using audio only. As it stands right now, video is a no no because of the pops and clicks. Fortunately for me, I am in no hurry, as I have had this laptop since June. Part of the delay was two bad Gigaport sound cards, that had to be returned. By the way, God said we are on our own.

AMaHM did u try turning on safe mode?? Just wonderin.

I had the exact same problem with my gigaport and my Toshiba laptop. I tried absolutely everything. The ticking would occur only when video was enabled under both XP and Vista. My only solution to get video working was to change to the Native Instruments Audio 8 DJ USB2 soundcard. Now video works perfectly.

I always wear a condom, what are you crazy????
I did try safe mode, no difference. I still have 79 proccesses running, so still have some work to do. As I said, it seemed to work fine with audio, I just have to test longer to make sure.

I am not ready to give up on the Gigaport yet, because the same thing happens with the onboard sound card. There are others on here that have this card, and it seems to work. I just have to do some more research and talk to a few more people. Any and all help is appreciated. I will look into that card, though.

I changed the power settings to max performance and went into sub plans and changed everything that wasn't nailed down to either never or low. Then I changed the USB hubs to OFF from ( let window control usb hubs ) I unchecked all usb hubs.

What? How? Gotta pack up now, but will be back later.

What, did you edit this post? Can you break this down so an old man can understand?

control panel > power options > max performance > advance options > usb

Where is this "let windows control usb hubs"? The other power options were mostly battery related.

Well I took the easy route. Boxed it up and sent it back. I spent about 6 hours yesterday with a dell rep doing everything from reinstalling drivers to safe mode to Usb disabling, just about everything. I had that link for the earlier topic already pulled up and it seemed I was informing him of the way to fix the problem.
Anyhow, I sent it back. It was on sale and a heck of a deal, but I think I prefer to go another route.
PS. I never hooked up an external USB sound device but I figure if the laptop can;t play music all by itself, what are the chances it would do good through usb? So I sent it back.

What?! Cheap, bargain bin computers that end up being more trouble than they're worth?
Say it isn't so...
Since you're looking at different routes now and hopefully are looking to make better investments now instead of bargain hunting since your company's livelihood depends on it (I didn't want to post anything when I saw this thread yesterday because I didn't want to add insult to injury... I've heard the dell horror stories thousands of times for the better of a decade now - and experienced them myself as primarily a dell & gateway network administrator at Xerox- don't even get me started on vista...pfff), I figured I'd show you this:
(being business expenses, they're tax write-offs anyways right?)
Here is PC World magazines "fastest vista notebook":
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136649-page,3-c,notebooks/article.html
Soon the best digital dj software will be combined with the best OS and we'll literally have the best of both worlds. For now though, you can do like several of us already are and run vista 100% natively on that computer. =)

Sorry, I forgot that these weren't even the "bargain bin" dells, they were the ... ahem ... "top of the line":
Even worse.
Regardless, I'm sincerely sorry for your frustration though.

they don't even mention the 2.6 option in the macbook pro or the optional 200gb 7200rpm drive, however apple is smoking crack it they think people are going to pay 700 dollars for 4 gigs of ram. For anyone considering a high end notebook the apple is actually one of the best deals out there. I looked a comparable dell or sony is actually more money the the macbook pro (and they lack the coolness factor as well)

You can select the 2.6 option for the mid and high end MacBook Pro's (not the lower end one) at the Apple Store online: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=7B723642&node=home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro
We'll get 45nm 2.8Ghz Penryn (Santa Rosa replacement) processor MacBook Pro's announced in January at MacWorld. Intel has been publicly prioritizing Apple processor and chipset demand (even over dell and HP) since the introduction of it's Core architecture in January of 2006.
I'm holding out for Intel Montevina platform (Penryn replacement) MacBook Pro updates at Apple WWDC next summer... quad core 32nm 3+Ghz processors anyone? ;)
Hopefully Blu-Ray drives will make their way into the line by then, if not at MacWorld.

I know, I know. =P
Just buy from Crucial.com if you want "Apple" ram... trust me. :)

For the love of gawd!!!
I've gotten flamed for the past year and a half on these forums for informing people that COMPARABLY equipped windows computers (and that's not even including all the GREAT high quality/user friendly bundled applications that come with EVERY Mac) are usually, if not always MORE expensive than Macs.
That old "Macs are too expensive" microsoft and windows computer manufacturer propoganda is so transparent at this point that it's not even funny... especially now that ALL Macs can run windows 100% natively (if necessary) and users can have 2 computers in 1.

Ever wonder why opening Apple product packaging (Macs/iPods/iPhones/etc.) is designed to feel like you're "opening a present on Christmas day"? Because they're products that the owner will (and should) take pride in.
The old anti-Mac sentiment "it's just a computer" comment that comes from windows users that have never owned a Mac/Apple product and have only bought brown box, generic technology just don't get it.
It's an Apple thing.
I've stated Apple's philosophy many times: "minimalist design, full functionality".
What's funny is that their "minimalist design" (and minimalist product naming) is the same "cool factor" that you speak of Cyder. ;)
Check out this new ComputerWorld blog (ComputerWorld is usually very pro-microsoft/windows/windows computer manufacturer BTW, but this blogger seems to have finally "gotten" it) and you'll understand:
http://blogs.computerworld.com/apples_not_so_secret_branding_advantage
"Apple's recent success in the technology market is, of course, the result of several factors. The solid hardware, the meticulously maintained and simplified software, and a fantastic retail experience from the showroom floor to the unboxing of its products. They have a total user experience that no one has yet been able to touch."

Forgotten why you really got flamed ConQuest?
1) You were trying to push Mac as a cheap solution when at the time it was not.
2) Macs were still at least a few months behind in price drops compared to the other big companies
3) Macs had limited hardware options compared to others
4) Excessively long repetitive responses.
Alot does happen in a year in IT. What was said back then does not always apply now. The first three reasons might not apply so much now but the 4th definately still does!
Times are changing for Apple and good to see because competition is always a good thing for the consumer.
