I love people like that playing at one of my locations. It reminds the owner why I work there. I have been paid to consult clubs in the past about what their DJ is doing wrong and in one case the DJ saw me walking with the owner and quit on the spot. Another club I played at tried another dj and I showed up to see what was going on. About halfway through the night the owner was begging me to save the night. I just so happened to have my equipment and a contract for a year in my truck. That wasn't planned....was it?

Man, there is so much discipline and maturity that has to be developed when it comes to DJing and that can take years. It's about programming, it's about awareness, reading crowds, keeping the dance floor going by beat matching. DJing to large crowds is kind of like a game of chess.
There are a lot of people who are concerned about the multitude of digital dj's going around. At one point, I was like "oh sh!t, now I've got to deal with even more assholes trying to take over my gig." Well, I've had other DJ's fill in for me and totally blew it. Some of these guys show up to the club with 1 laptop and nothing else. It's stuff like this that gives computer dj's a bad reputation. The computer should only be used to store music files and all the mixing should be done on a DJ mixer or controller. You've got to have these things if you take your craft seriously. Weather you're beat mixing or not, everyone should take pride in a good transition from one song to another.
This is an interesting post. It brought back a lot of memories of how I was when I started DJing. Man, I was fucking up every single mix....my programming was piss poor, I was playing on the worst gear and I was too arrogant to accept the fact that I totally sucked. I should probably set up a post asking everyone to describe their first few gigs. I've got some real embarrassing stories to get off my chest. lol
