That might be problem with the hole serie. Dell knows to do that :)

Question - do the guys on here using Macs have any of these problems as I'm seriously thinking of going down that route (need to get a refund from Dell and save some extra money first).

Does the Macbook work OK? Seems to be integrated graphics with shared memory, or, is the Macbook Pro better with 2 graphics cards (and even more expensive)

Right, gonna trawl the Mac thread............

Just a tip...if you can afford to spend a few bucks more for the GOLD Service Warranty....do it! You get top notch service and you speak to AMERICANS!! Makes a world of difference. In the mean time I'll stay away from the studio series.

Well I had some time on my hands today, and wanted to do some maintenance on my gig machine (Dell XPS M1730).

So, I blatted it and loaded XP. Configured up the system, same issue as before, ~30% CPU used by hardware interrupts at all times. Reinstalled several times experimenting a bit with ATA/AHCI and other things, when managed to get XP running normally with 0% CPU usage at idle. DPC latency checker was in the green as well. Had to disable onboard sound to bring the latency down a bit. Installed VDJ, hit up audio, working perfectly. Video, also perfect, no freeze. As soon as I tried to use advanced master tempo however, it went to crap and I couldn't sort it.

Reinstalled Vista, couldn't get DPC to stay in the green this time, even with hardware disabled and no drivers installed. Played around a bit, but couldn't get the latency stable. Interestingly no video freeze present this time.

Reinstalled XP again, same as before, everything working except master tempo. At this point I ran out of time to play, so took a backup machine (Core2Quad 2.4GHz, X1950 Pro) which performed flawlessley.

So what other laptop would you recomend other than a mac pro, please advice with what specs need to have in it as well as manufacture

Thanks

I outfitted my 4th rig with a Dell Vostro laptop last December. It was scary because the Vostro series just launched last year, but it runs my program with the 4500 perfectly. Duo Core, 2 Gig of ram, 256 Video card and XP.

are you able to scratch video and not have it freeze? my issue with my super computer (thats what hercules tech support called it! lol) is the video will play but then the vidoe freezes. the music on the video plays and if i scratch that jog wheel it picks up right where the audio is..

audio only tracks are fine..

i have a xps 1530 with 4gb ram, duo core 2.53 ghz 512 nnvidia card...

Try updating DirectX 9 August 2008 edition and new NVIDIA drivers.
Which codec pack do you use? I recommend K-Lite.

Nice one mate, I would say that's a result.

Have a good look at the Toshiba range of laptops, one of the best manufactures of laptops in my book. My old gig laptop was a Toshiba (XP), used it for over a year, with no problems what so ever. In fact it's still going strong now.

I've got a Acer now with Vista. It's not bad now, but it took some setting up though.

But Toshiba mate, can't fault them.

hey DJSoulman,

How did you check the dp latency on the ddell studio, i got one a wk ago 1537 studio, i just want to see if mine is going to give me that problem also

thanks

ok what my dpc is 4000us is its in the red, is that bad, can some 1 explain what dpc is and what it does,
Thanks

http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml . tells you all you need to know about the program. yes in the RED is not good. read the analysis in the program under the graph. it gives you an idea of what going on. use process explorer as well to check on the running processes...

I totally disadvise Acer : very low quality ;-)
