I have had some luck with some laptops when I disabled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery in Device Manager.
Dell's wireless cards drivers suck, so make sure that that is disabled.
On Vista try switching of all Aero effects by changing to the Windows Classic Mode in the screen personalization options.
Good luck.
There is a useful performance analysis tool called xperf that is included in the microsoft performance tools here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/performance/default.aspx
It can help isolate the driver causing the high latencies.

I just bought a Studio 1737 and had the infamous DPC spike issue. Dell posted a bios update last week (version A 06) and it appears the 5 second DPC spike issue has been resolved. I still get occasional red spike I'm trying to track down but so far after hours of testing my firewire 410 can handle the load w/o dropouts or distortion set at 512 [11 ms]. I'd been relying on my Inspiron 6000 (which I refer to as "ol' Bessie" now) up till this point for gigs, but now that the 1737 bios is fixed, the studio 17 really flies!

On another note about your Dell 6000, have you done or considered a HD replacement yet for a larger one? I'm considering.

Hi,
I can confirm the latest BIOS upgrade for the Studio 1737 has most definitely fixed the latency issues, see below screen shots.
When I checked the Dell AU site yesterday (22nd June 2009), the 1735 had not been patched, as the latest BIOS update was still showing as A05!
Dell Studio 1737, BIOS Revision A05 (ALL hardware devices enabled as per standard settings issued by Dell);;

Dell Studio 1737, BIOS Revision A06 (ALL hardware devices enabled as per standard settings issued by Dell);;

As far as I know the laptop was not in 'full performance' mode either and the system was still technically booting up!
Also this isn't my laptop, rather a colleague who I work with, I thought I'd perform the upgrade just to clarify the fix, for all you people!
I WAS going to buy the 1737 until I came accross this forum, and didn't really want to wait until it Dell came to the party and fixed the issue!
Also interestingly Dell have made no mention of this issue being resolved!

Hey guys,
There is only one true workaround for the 1737 series model. See my thread here, http://www.nativeinstruments.com/forum/showthread.php?t=82401
I own a 1737, and some users have had success with the 1537 models as well.
I rolled back to the A05 bios because the A06 caused more problems even though the dpc spikes were better while the acpi.sys thread was running.

glprod: Specifically what problems occur when you install the A06 Bios? I couldn't find the info on the other forum, prolly right there in front of me, sorry...

bryantpb: If you are asking me about my 6000 I'm probably leaving my present 7200 RPM 40 gig HD in there for now. 40 gigs is enough for a night. Besides I have found if I have my entire catalog on hand it makes it harder for me to pick my play list :-D

I run a Dell XPS 1530 specially modified by me, my DPC chart is all tiny green bars at the bottom. :) I've been customizing and building systems for 17 years, I can share some tips if you'd like.

This is very worrying, i just orderd a dell xps m1340:
Intel core duo 2 T8600 - 2.4ghz
320gb sata hard drive - 7200rpm
4 gb ssd3 ram
Vista home premium
Does it sound like i will have problems as it has not yet been delivered and i can still cancel, the dell assistant told me it would be more than enough.
Please let me know and i will cancel for a 2.4ghz macbook. I am running a hercules rmx and two cdj 800's mk2.

Run DPC Latency checker, if it acts crazy, send it back. You got 30 days, I think...

hi guys i have a dell xps m1530 and i used to have the same latency problems with my wireless hi-fi card and i speak with the dell peoples many time and they never fixed it so after couple mounths trying different thing i found a fix the wireless card that come with my xps m1530 its dell wireless mini card 1395 and its drivers cause all this problems, so i replace the card for a new intel pro/wireless 3945 and my problems are solved now i can play the music including videos with the internet on in the same time without any problems you can buy this card in amazons for like 22 dollars and you dont need any drivers vista reconize the device right away so i hope this help and good luck.

I am using the Dell XPS m1330 and downgraded from Vista 32 bit back to the XP sp3. I am running 3 gigs of ram and also basic sound card, basic video card and also 2.2 gig processor. I spin monthly and I used this last month for the first time with XP loaded and it went flawlessly. The gig is for 4 hours. No problems and next to no latency. So far this has been the fastest system that I have had for the price. The last time I ran the DPC latency tool with no programs running, my system was running around 75 and below milliseconds. I originally purchased a studio and had the same issues. Dell took it back for a full refund and I purchased this one. Hopefully this helps.

hey guys i been using the dell studio 1535. i just started have problem with the latency being in the red. I tried something out today i took the battery off the laptop and let it run of the AC power and check the lactency and had no red spike at all. I think the problem is with the power management on the laptop or the batteries are a piece of junk. Maybe this might help someone out.

In device manager, disable the "ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" device...This saved me some CPU overhead in my gig config ;)

soulman, did ya try the bios update from the dell.com page ? My guess is that there´s some microcode issues on the motherboard that is causing these latencys. It could also be the chip bus ( Ricoh it´s called if I remember correctly )

Yep, Dell Studio was collected at noon today, sadly I'll probably never buy a Dell again, although I'm currently using a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 to do the job (with shared graphics too!). It's just a bit slow with a 1.6m single processor.
Now the quest is on to find something else to do the job. Toshiba's used to have problems with the sound chips and were a no no for DJing (with audio only), they OK now?
Never heard of MSI, do they sell in the UK? Will have to check them out on the 'net.
Been seriously thinking of the Apple Mac route, bit expensive, but, still not sure about them either. Is the Macbook OK for Video? It seems to have shared graphics or is the Macbook Pro necessary with the extra graphics card?

Glad to hear you finally get it sorted out. Another bad image for Dell.
I also suggest Toshiba or MSI laptops, both have 2 years of warranty and good quality. On better MSI laptops you have 5.1 sound card which works great ;)

Sorry WasabiTech, seems like you missed this part of this thread "Posted Thu 27 Nov 08 @ 9:26 pm"
Been using an HP G70 17" laptop for several months now. It certainly solved the problem LoL :-)

SOLUTION: Use system restore. I only had my Studio 1555 for 2 weeks. It was great 1st night I used it. Next time glitching all the time.
I restored after reading most of this thread and thinking OH SH!T
I have now installed V6.0.2 on Vista x64.
Installed VDJ first then checked
Then the MK2 with the 2009_HDJS_3 driver.
Now to find out what I did that caused the glitches.
Good Luck

Just a follow up to this whole forum discussion on Dell Studio Laptops. Version A07 Bios was released a few weeks ago. The problem apparently was as suspected, bad coding in the Bios. As far as the Dell 1737 is concerned, the problem appears to be fixed with the release of A07. The blame for this whole mess should be laid at the feet of Phoenix Technologies IMHO, not Dell.
I used VDJ on my 1737 for 2 nights in a row, 6 hrs. in operation each night, at Santo's Party House and the performance was very impressive. I feel very comfortable using it now.
Keep in mind I only use VDJ for mixing Audio, not Video.
